Duluth Black businessman and inventor Alexander Miles developed the western block of 300 West Fourth Street in 1892. This development included eight rental houses. Five of those still stand. Duluth architects Traphagen & Fitzpatrick designed the homes on a repeating design.

The houses were marketed as smaller efficient homes to middle-class families and white-collar downtown professionals. Each residence boasted eight rooms, including a servant’s quarters. Modern amenities such as electricity, steel range, running water, and central heat were all included at the time of construction.
