Celebrating the People Behind Historic Preservation Every May

Duluth’s historic homes, buildings, and landmarks are an important part of what makes our city so unique. From well-preserved homes to restoration projects and longtime community landmarks, these properties help tell the story of Duluth’s history and neighborhoods.

Each May during Preservation Month, the Duluth Preservation Alliance recognizes properties and preservation efforts through the Preservation Awards and Centennial Recognition Program. These awards highlight the people and projects helping maintain and preserve Duluth’s historic character for future generations.

Preservation Awards

Homes more than 50 years old that demonstrate a strong commitment to historic preservation may be eligible for a Duluth Preservation Alliance Preservation Award. Particular consideration is given to the preservation of original historic features such as windows, siding, trim, masonry, and architectural details, along with historically sensitive repairs and restoration work that honors the home’s character.

Preservation Awards are presented annually during Preservation Month in May at the Duluth Preservation Alliance Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Centennial Awards

Homes that are 100 years old or more and have retained their historic charm, character, and integrity may be recognized with a Duluth Preservation Alliance Centennial Home certification. These homes represent more than a century of Duluth’s history, architecture, and community life, preserving the character and presence that continue to define Duluth neighborhoods today.

Centennial Home certifications are presented once each year during Preservation Month in May at the Duluth Preservation Alliance Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony.

Nominate a Property

Do You Know a Historic Home or Building That Deserves Recognition?

Whether it’s a beautifully preserved property you’ve admired for years or your own lovingly maintained home, we invite you to submit a nomination for a DPA Preservation Award, Centennial Award, or the Annual Fall Tour.

Every nomination helps celebrate the craftsmanship, history, and stewardship that keep Duluth’s architectural legacy alive. From landmark estates and neighborhood gems to thoughtfully restored commercial spaces, these places tell the story of our city and the people who continue to care for it.
