Supporting Historic Preservation in the Duluth Area

Grant Award Amounts Fall 2025 and Spring 2026: $1,500

The Duluth Preservation Alliance Grant Program helps preserve and protect historic places throughout the Duluth area by providing funding for essential preservation and capital improvement projects.

Through modest but meaningful grants, DPA supports nonprofit and public-serving organizations that care for historically significant buildings and community landmarks. These investments help strengthen community identity, preserve local heritage, and ensure historic places remain part of our shared future.


Who Can Apply

Grant funding is available to: nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, religious organizations, public entities

Eligible structures must be located within Duluth or approximately 20 miles of Downtown Duluth and maintain historic significance and integrity.

At this time, DPA does not provide funding for private or for-profit projects, including: residences, rental properties, commercial businesses


Eligible Projects

Grant funding may support preservation-focused capital improvement projects, including:

  • Exterior façade and building envelope improvements
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Plumbing improvements
  • HVAC systems
  • Hazardous material mitigation

Funding may also be used to replace non-historic materials necessary for the continued use of a historic structure, such as non-historic roofs or windows.

Projects that align closely with the Duluth Preservation Alliance mission and values are strongly encouraged.

To Qualify for Consideration:

  • Structure must be at least 50 years old
  • Property must retain general historic integrity
  • Organization must be nonprofit, educational, religious, or public
  • Structure must be located within Duluth or approximately 20 miles of Downtown Duluth
  • Applicant must demonstrate active fundraising efforts for the project
  • Preference given to National Register, Local Landmark, or historic district properties
  • Preference given to projects preserving historic materials rather than replacement
  • Projects should align with DPA mission and values

Please note: Private residences, rental properties, and for-profit businesses are not eligible for funding.
