John A. and Elizabeth Watterworth House

A large Victorian-style house with a steep metal roof

31 W. 5th St.

Contractors John Watterworth and Henry Fee became partners in 1877 and moved to Duluth in 1884, where they expanded their business and practiced for forty years. Most notably, they won the bid to build Central High School in 1891. The architect is unknown but Watterworth & Fee likely designed the structure in-house. Originally a single-family home, but currently multi-unit, the building retains many period features including leaded glass and transom windows, a turret, pocket doors, and hardwood floors, and antique oak trim. These details are typical of the Queen Anne style which was popular in the Midwest from the 1880s to about 1900. This house was built circa 1892.
