Morgan Park Walking Tour

Explore Duluth’s historic company town along the St. Louis River
Step back in time and explore one of Duluth’s most fascinating historic neighborhoods. Built by U.S. Steel in the early 1900s along the St. Louis River, Morgan Park was designed as a planned company town to support the massive Duluth Works steel plant. Originally called “Model City,” the neighborhood was later renamed for financier J.P. Morgan after the formation of U.S. Steel.
Morgan Park
A Planned Community Shaped by Steel
During this guided walking tour, you’ll discover how Morgan Park was carefully designed around community, family life, and industry, with homes, schools, churches, parks, and shops all within walking distance. At its peak, the nearby steel plant employed thousands of workers producing steel, wire, nails, and fencing for shipment across the country.
As the American steel industry declined, U.S. Steel gradually closed the Duluth Works plant, ending operations in 1981. While the industrial site along the river later underwent major environmental cleanup and restoration, Morgan Park itself remains a proud and remarkably intact historic neighborhood.

The walking tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers about two miles as participants explore much of the neighborhood on foot, learning about its architecture, planning, industry, and the generations of families who called Morgan Park home. Future tour dates will be announced as they become available.
