Dudley & Elizabeth Russell House

A modern white two-story house with large windows

2700 Minnesota Avenue

This Park Point home, designed and built for Dudley and Elizabeth Russell in 1941, was unique at the time in Duluth with its modern Bauhaus design; it was featured in two Duluth News Tribune articles. With its setting at the top of the dunes, the horizontal lines harmonize with the expansive views of the Lake Superior horizon.

The structure, designed by Duluth architect Harold Starin, is more stunning than ever after extensive preservation and restoration by the current owners.. Large windows oriented for privacy and framing a magnificent view, curved windows to take in a corner view, several outdoor porches, patios, and decks are key features of this home. Plus, natural building materials of wood and stone enhance the feeling of bringing the outdoor environment in. The landscape incorporates native dune grass, a repurposed-stone wall, and block garden beds in keeping with the multi-level street side. Modest in size, this home is packed with mid- century modern design. Mr. Russell was president of the Duluth Universal Milling Company.
