Herman and Esther Jacobson House

A white two-story house with a covered front porch

4215 W. 6th St.

This house was built in 1924 for the Herman Jacobson family at a cost of $4,500. But less than a year later, he sold it to the August and Anna Anderson family, who lived here for decades. Residents of West Duluth from the 1880s to the 1920s were mostly immigrants, a significant number of whom came from Scandinavia. By the 1920s, some immigrants had become relatively prosperous and owned their own houses. Herman Jacobson was a Finnish immigrant and carpenter and likely did the construction himself.

August was a watchman at a horseshoe factory and he and his wife, Anna, had immigrated from Sweden. This home was built in the Craftsman style, popular in the early twentieth century, which features simpler forms, wood trim, paneling and doors, hardwood floors, and other natural materials. Indeed, this West Duluth home retains gorgeous original woodwork and a wonderful built-in china cabinet.
