Who was Arthur Hanford?

The Duluth Preservation Alliance recently had an open house at 2345 Woodland Avenue built in 1915. A beautiful Mediterranean design on a large lot next to the Glen Avon Hockey Arena. Built for Warren and Catherina Greene. Warren was an attorney who became County attorney.

Arthur Hanford was born in Duluth July 28th. He was active in business, a member of the Commercial Club and the Real Estate Exchange. He married Miss Rose Taylor in 1909. They had three children Ruth, Helen and Charles. He built a house at 2027 Woodland Ave next to his father’s home at 2017 Woodland Ave. He died at the early age of 56, from complications due to illness.

The Hanford Construction Company was started by his father Heber Hanford in 1893. He was the president; his wife Sarah was vice president and is son Arthur was the secretary. Even after Heber’s death in 1914 the company was still a complete organization for the handling and development of real estate including the building of the homes.

The firm designed and built all the Alexander McDougall (designed the Whale back ship) houses in Duluth, including store, bank, hospital and hotel, also the residents W.J. McCabe, W.C. Mitchell, Simon Clark, P. S. Anneke, L. L. Culbertson and J. H. Harper.
