As part of the environmental cleanup of the U.S. Steel site in western Duluth and as part of the city’s plans to extend the Western Waterfront Trail, a section of the Lake Superior and Mississippi River Railroad tourist train may be closed (“All aboard this scenic train ride,” June 30). I learned of this attack on the tourist railroad long distance, and I fail to understand why the city would even think of damaging an attraction that lures tourists to town. The city should be coming to the railroad and asking, “What can we do to help you make this attraction even better?”I think what needs to be discovered and exposed is why the city is considering this. Is there something not yet revealed that the city wants to give the land to, something that promises more tax revenue, something that would benefit the mayor or someone on the City Council? There sure seems to me to be a lot more to the story, which probably will not come to light until after the tracks have been taken up.
